Phuket – the largest island in Thailand and packed full of amenities and entertainments, this internationally renowned holiday destination is a great place to start your Thailand diving holiday. The west coast beaches on the Andaman Sea are the best places to look for dive schools and tour providers, particularly, Karon, Kata and Patong.
Similan Islands – a small archipelago and one of the best dive sites in the world, the water is crystal clear and the visibility is amazing. It’s easily reached northwest of Phuket.
Hin Daeng – south of Phuket, this is a popular choice with liveaboard dive cruises for those who like to take it slow. There’s an abundance of marine life and plenty to see.
Khao Lak – close to the Similan Islands and excellent place to stay if you want diving accommodation close to the action, this island is a staple part of west Thailand diving. The island itself is full of natural beauty.
Krabi – the developed tourist destination on the west coast of Thailand is home to a number of international standard dive schools and services. Accommodation in Krabi is excellent.
Ph Phi Islands – these fames islands are growing in popularity as locations for dive training. Phi Phi Don is the main island, with dive excursions and schools, plus you can take trips from Krabi and Phuket.
Koh Samui – the densest concentration of die schools and services is based on Koh Samui. From there, tour guides will take you out to the islands in the archipelago, mainly nearby Koh Tao.
Koh Tao is a rich dive location with a number of surrounding dive sites, all worth visiting. With accommodation on Koh Tao available, it’s a dive holiday in itself.
The main diving season on the west coast of Thailand is October to May. On east coast Thailand, the season runs from February to October.
There are a number of professionally run dive courses on either coast of Thailand, fully insured and cost effective in comparison to the equivalents elsewhere in the world. Here’s a run down:
Divemaster Course - In which you begin your PADI professional career, start taking care of other divers and take your diving skills to new levels. Courses cover theory, dive skills, stamina tests, practical application and assisting with confined and open water dives from other PADI courses.
Enriched Air Diver Course (NITROX) - A course designed to qualify certified divers to use enriched air ("Nitrox") for no stop recreational diving.
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course - The PADI "Adventures in Diving" program follows the Open Water course and includes deep diving, night diving and navigation.
